Why Do So Few Sea Turtle Hatchlings Survive?

A hatchling reaching the water has completed one difficult journey, but it has not yet reached adulthood. There is no single measured survival percentage that applies to every sea turtle nest.

What does “one in a thousand” mean?

Dry Tortugas National Park describes an estimate of one in 1,000 to 10,000 hatchlings surviving to adulthood in its discussion of the southeastern United States. Dangers on the beach and in the water

A useful classroom model

Draw 1,000 dots and circle one. Label it an illustration of an estimate, not a real nest count. Then discuss three questions:

• Does the picture say where the estimate came from?
• Does it define survival as reaching the sea or reaching adulthood?
• What information would you need to compare two beaches fairly?
