Why Are Sea Turtles Endangered? Threats and How to Help

Sea turtle populations face several human-caused pressures. The word endangered also has a precise meaning in conservation assessments and laws; it is not the same label for every species. Check our dated species-status guide before making a claim about a particular turtle.

Getting caught in fishing gear

Bycatch means catching animals unintentionally during fishing. It can injure turtles or trap them underwater. Reducing it is a major part of NOAA's turtle conservation work. NOAA bycatch overview.

A turtle excluder device, or TED, is one practical response. Its grid directs larger animals toward an escape opening in a shrimp trawl while smaller shrimp pass through. It addresses a particular fishing-gear problem, not every threat in the ocean. NOAA guide to TEDs.

Losing safe places to live

NOAA identifies habitat loss, vessel strikes, pollution and collection of turtles or eggs among the pressures sea turtles face. Conservation has to protect feeding areas and nesting beaches as well as the turtles themselves. NOAA sea turtle overview.

Beach lighting is a specific example: bright artificial lights can draw hatchlings away from the ocean. They use the naturally brighter seaward view and darker landward silhouettes; they are not simply following the moon. FWC lighting research.

Choose a useful action

Start with a question: which threat does this activity address? A litter cleanup addresses waste; it does not replace safer fishing gear or nesting-habitat protection. Ask an adult to help choose a local organized activity, follow its safety instructions and leave wildlife handling to trained responders.

Browse volunteer organizations, or make a two-column worksheet matching each threat above to a possible response. Avoid promising that one purchase or one cleanup saves a specific number of turtles without evidence.
