How Fast Can a Sea Turtle Swim?

Sea turtle speed depends on the species, activity and how it is measured. A turtle does not have one speed for every journey. Be cautious about a single number advertised as the top speed of every sea turtle.
What have scientists measured?
In a 2002 study by Scott Eckert, instruments recorded seven female leatherbacks between nesting visits near St Croix in the US Virgin Islands. Their most frequent speeds were 0.56–0.84 metres per second, about 1.3–1.9 miles per hour. The highest measured speeds for the individual turtles ranged from 1.9–2.8 metres per second, about 4.3–6.3 miles per hour.
Those results describe seven turtles in one setting. They do not establish a maximum for all leatherbacks or rank every sea turtle species. Our earlier claim that sea turtles reach 20–22 mph was not supported by a measurement we could verify, so we removed it.
How do their flippers work?
Watch the front flippers: their strokes can look like wings moving through water. A study of wild green turtles examined these swimming movements and observed speeds of roughly 0.2–1 metre per second. Different animals, equipment and conditions can produce different measurements.
Try thinking like a researcher
Before comparing two speed claims, ask:
- Which species and life stage were measured?
- Was the number a usual speed or a brief peak?
- How many turtles were observed, and where?
- Was movement measured through water or across a map?
A short measurement cannot tell us how fast a turtle travels throughout its life. Learn about turtle navigation, or try Daily Migration. The game's movement and distance are pretend; they are not research measurements.
