Are Sea Turtles Reptiles?

Uses a voice your browser identifies as local. Starts only when you press Read.

Yes, sea turtles are reptiles. Living in the ocean does not make them fish, and using both land and water does not make them amphibians. NOAA classifies sea turtles as marine reptiles. NOAA sea turtle overview

Where turtles fit

Turtles belong to the order Testudines. Sea turtles are members of that group, alongside their other turtle relatives. NOAA's leatherback profile lists its class as Reptilia and its order as Testudines. Leatherback scientific classification

Classification describes biological relationships. A short checklist of visible traits can help us learn, but it is not enough to classify every animal without exceptions.

Air above, eggs on land

Sea turtles breathe air with lungs and must return to the surface. Adult females lay eggs on beaches even though they spend most of their lives at sea. Swimming flippers and a streamlined body help them live in the ocean. NOAA's marine reptile introduction

Lungs alone do not make an animal a reptile: people have lungs too. Instead, compare several features alongside the animal's place in its family tree.

Does cold-blooded mean cold all the time?

No. Temperature strongly affects sea turtles, and sufficiently cold conditions can leave them unable to swim normally. This condition is called cold-stunning. FWC cold-stunning explanation

Leatherbacks show why simple labels need care. Their large bodies, insulation and circulation help them maintain body temperatures above surrounding cold water. They are still reptiles. NOAA leatherback physiology

Are all turtle shells alike?

Most sea turtles have hard shells with external scutes. The leatherback instead has a tough, leathery covering and lengthwise ridges. It does not stop being a reptile because it differs from the familiar hard-shell picture. NOAA leatherback profile

Try it: Compare two species profiles. Find one feature they share and one that differs. Then explore sea turtles and tortoises to meet more members of the turtle family.
